Protection for the Elderly-Personal Alarm Systems

Aging is something that will eventually happen to us all, and sooner or later, we may no longer be safe staying alone. Of course, you don’t want to burden your family with your care, and you definitely would rather stay at home than go to a care facility, but what options do you have? What happens if you fall or become ill and can’t get to the telephone to call for help? Should you just sit at home and never really do anything for fear that the inevitable may occur? That is certainly no way to spend your golden years!

As we grow older, our bones and muscles are not as strong as they once were. Our doctors tell us to do exercises to help strengthen them, and may suggest that we take supplements to help as well, but at some point, you may have to accept the fact that your health is no longer as good as you would like it to be. You get sick more often, you are weaker than ever before, and sometimes you need help with the simple things, like getting out of bed, or carrying in your groceries. You don’t want to lose your freedom or independence, and you are afraid that if you talk to your family that is exactly what will happen. So, what do you do?

One of the best things that you could do is invest in a personal alarm system. If anything happens while you are home alone, and you need help, you simply push a button. Depending on the type of alarm system you choose, you may even have built in monitors that watch your heart rate and blood pressure, alerting help if there is a problem.

There are many companies out there that offer these types of personal alarm systems. One such company is called Lifeline. With this company, someone from the monitoring center will call you when the alarm is pushed, to find out what the problem is, and then notify the proper services, so that help is on the way quickly.

Response Link offers other more personal services, including daily phone calls and reminders. This can help you remember to take your medication on time, check your insulin, etc. This service typically costs around $35 each month, which isn’t that much when you think about the independence this type of system can allow you to keep a little longer.

If you would rather forego the monthly fees, you can have a personal alarm system that is pre-programmed with several phone numbers of relatives and neighbors, so that the call is automatically placed for you when you push a button. This is a little more expensive up front, but some people would rather go this route than worry about another payment each month.

Personal alarm systems offer you the freedom and independence you are seeking, without sacrificing your personal safety. They are great for those living alone, or those with major medical problems.
